Today's Bow Tie

This is Mad Men's Harry Crane boasting a thin, batwing style bow tie. In a show dominated by classic and skinny neck ties, Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce's Head of Media certainly makes his appearance known.

P.S.

I'm rocking a light blue bow tie with white polka dots today. Once again, handmade by Brige.

Boardwalk Empire

Prior to writing this piece, I was planning on putting together something more personal. I even had close to 250 words down. Then, upon doing a quick Google News search for bow-ties, I came across an Esquire article talking about the bow tie's prominence in the new HBO series, Boardwalk Empire. in the article, author, Elizabeth Valleau, provides a few bow tie wearing tips for life in the modern age:

Do not trust your monochrome instincts. A black tie can look like a Malcolm C costume, and the red-on-white... Pee Wee. Try a nice print, or a plaid tie — paisley, even. They're more casual options, which means they're less self-conscious.
A few words on pairing: a pop of color in the shirt, a sweater vest on top, and you're ready for the office. Boom.
Once everybody's used to it, you can start taking the whole bow-tie thing in more formal directions. Try the print tie with your plaid suit. Then move on to the larger Tom Ford model in black and gray, the Tom Ford model being a nod to the twenties look anyway, only modified (very nicely) for the modern man.
Match your swagger with integrity, and you'll have a leg up on our friends from the Boardwalk, who've got some catching up to do in that department by next week.

Recently, I've become a sucker for shows set in the earlier 20th century and Boardwalk Empire's flashy commercials certainly caught my attention. Unfortunately, being a poor college graduate, I don't have the luxury of HBO. Looks like I will have to wait until it comes out on DVD or Netflix to check it out.

That's all for now aficionados,

Nick

Today's Bow Tie

As often as I can, I will attempt to post a bow tie from the web or wild which catches my attention. Fellow aficionados, if you come across one, make sure you have your cameras ready. If you send me a good one, it may find a place on the blog.

Today's bow tie comes from my personal collection:

This little number is actually handmade. Brige (girlfriend, teacher, seamstress), made it from an old pair of pants. Who knew it was possible?

Welcome

Welcome to Bring Back the Bow Tie!

Once heralded as a symbol of intelligence and class, the bow tie has more recently been thrust to the sidelines, forgotten by professionals and feared by the youth. Today, this simple, yet elegant fashion accessory stands at a crossroads: remain an ironic symbol of nonconformity before ultimately disappearing into ambiguity, or once again return to prominence within the professional world.

As we stand on the cusp of completing another decade we, the career driven youth, have the chance to embrace this under-appreciated article of clothing and thrust it prominently back into the mainstream. Join me in my venture to bring back the bow tie.
